Volunteer Spotlight: Meet Cindy!

The Haven exists as a resource for independence and a champion for inclusion for people of all ages with disabilities. Together, we can create a world where people with disabilities are included and celebrated for who they truly are — talented and incredible human beings. We make it a point to select positive, compassionate, hard-working individuals who want to enjoy giving back to their community in rewarding place where they can make a difference. We would not be able to accomplish what we have in the last 60 years had it not been for our amazing volunteers. We invite you to join our cause and connect with others in our community who are working to make a difference.

We’re excited to feature Cindy, one of our Administrative Volunteers, in the summer volunteer spotlight.

What do you do as a volunteer at The Haven?

I process time sheets for our Adult Employment Program by inputting attendance and payroll information into the computer data system. I make sure they get paid for their hard work!  The process is detailed but I enjoy it very much.

Where are you from?

I am originally from Reston, Virginia. They say Virginia is for lovers but my husband and I moved to Florida and we have been happily here for 13 years!

How long have you been volunteering at The Haven?

I have been volunteering at The Haven for 10 years now. Where’s my retirement plan? Just kidding! I love what I do and have no plans to go anywhere else – anytime soon!

What first brought you to volunteer at The Haven?

Honestly, finding something to do with my time while my husband played golf three times a week! A girl can only take so much of dragging a golf bag around the green.

What does The Haven mean to you?

It’s very satisfying to be involved with an organization that helps children, teens, and adults with unique abilities become active members of their community. The clients are so happy here and it brightens my day to see their remarkable potential.

What keeps you coming back?

The clients and the staff. I have the opportunity to work with a team that truly loves the people that we serve. The smiles on the client’s faces make me so happy and I know that what I am doing here is making a difference in their lives.

What are you up to when you’re not volunteering with us?

I volunteer with my husband at the Knights of Columbus in Sarasota. We set-up the Bingo games, support the pancake breakfast, and attend 17 baseball games during spring training.

Volunteer With Us:

Each volunteer job requires a specific set of skills and time commitment, from one-time projects to once per week responsibilities. Although we have a wide variety of volunteer opportunities the need in each of these areas fluctuates. Our Community Outreach Director will let you know which opportunities are currently open.

Volunteers are invited to attend a volunteer information session to learn about the many opportunities to serve at The Haven and for a tour of the agency. Please call 941.355.8808 x226 or email jcadavid@CommunityHaven.org for more information.

We look forward to having you as part of our team!
